What is a Category I Project?
A Category I project is considered to have low complexity, below you will find examples of what improvements and upgrades would fall under this umbrella.
- AMENITIES - Basic improvements designed to enhance the playing experience and appeal of tennis facilities, including adding fixed tennis court amenities (i.e. windscreens, backboards, etc.) and installing blended 36’ and 60’ tennis lines on existing tennis courts.
- TENNIS COURT TECH - Integration of technology on tennis courts to enhance the playing experience and assist with facility management, including SmartAccess gates, video broadcasting and streaming technology, and scoreboards.
- INCLUSIVE ACCESS - Installation of amenities and facility features that enhance tennis court accessibility, including widening gates, installing ramps, and paving pathways to create a more inclusive environment for all players, regardless of mobility.
Category I Funding Allotment
What is a Category II Project?
A Category II project has a medium level of complexity. Examples of what our team considers a Category II project can be found below.
- LIGHTING - Installation of new or upgrades to existing tennis court lighting systems and fixtures.
- FENCING - Installation of new or repairs to existing tennis court fencing. •
- RESURFACING - In addition to acrylic resurfacing, resurfacing existing tennis courts may include crack repair systems, overlay treatments, patching birdbaths, and leveling high areas to reestablish the court’s evenness.
How to Apply for a Category I or II Project:
- Submit an Inquiry Form:
Complete the TVS Inquiry Form to express interest in learning more about the grant program and connect with a project manager.

Complete a Funding Application:
Submit project details including photos of each tennis court and detailed cost estimates from the contractor and/or manufacturer for the work being performed with a completed funding application.

Await an Award Decision:
A TVS panel will review the completed funding application to make a funding decision.

Maintain Accountability:
If funding is granted, the project must be completed within the 12-month timeframe. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of funds. Once the project is complete, submit photos of the work performed along with proof of payment and the USTA will reimburse you the funds for the amount awarded.
