The Tournament Level Guidance is a tool to understand the different levels of competitive tournament.

Junior (BG 12-18s)
- Level 1 - Elite, goals of playing professional or college varsity tennis, ranked top 400 in the nation
- Level 2 - High performance, goals of playing professional or college varsity tennis, ranked top 500 in the nation
- Level 3 - High performance, goals of playing professional or college varsity tennis, ranked top 1000 in the nation
- Level 4 - Advanced tennis competition, ranked top 2000 in the nation
- Level 5 - Advanced tennis competition, ranked top 4000 in the nation
- Level 6 - Intermediate tennis competition experience, 4000+ in the nation
- Level 7 - Intermediate tennis competition experience, new to ranked tournaments, plays recreationally
- Junior Circuit - Advanced beginner to intermediate playing level, minimal previous competition experience, just starting and/or plays recreationally
- Unsanctioned - no description
Adult
Age (organized by age division in increment of five years (i.e.. Men’s 40, 45, 50, etc.). Must turn that minimum age the year of the tournament to qualify.
- Level 1 - Usually played by the most advanced adults within a specified age group. Many were former collegiate or professional players.
- Level 2 - National tournaments that attract both advanced adults from across the country and advanced adult players from the host section within a specified age group.
- Level 3 - National tournaments that attract both advanced adults from across the country and advanced adult players from the host section within a specified age group.
- Level 4 - Section tournament that typically attracts intermediate and advanced players from within a specified age group.
- Level 5 - Section tournament that typically attracts intermediate and advanced players from within a specified age group.
- Level 6 - Local tournament that typically attracts intermediate and advanced players from within a specified age group. Tends to be more focused on players from a smaller geographic area
- Level 7 - Local tournament that typically attracts intermediate and advanced players from within a specified age group. Tends to be more focused on players from a smaller geographic area and typically no more than one day long.
- Unsanctioned - This allows providers to use the Serve Tennis software to run their tournament without following the requirements in Friend at Court. This is a great option for providers running a Club Championship or other event where they want control over the draws or want to use unique rules.
Family (includes Mother/Daughter, Father/Son, Mother/Son, Father/Daughter, Grandparent/Grandchild, Husband/Wife)
- Level 1 - Usually played by the most advanced adults within a specified age group. Many were former collegiate or professional players.
- Level 2 - National tournaments that attract both advanced adults from across the country and advanced adult players from the host section within a specified age group.
- Level 3 - National tournaments that attract both advanced adults from across the country and advanced adult players from the host section within a specified age group.

- Level 1 - The only tournament in this level is the NTRP National Championships. All players play within their current NTRP level.

- Level 4 - Section tournament that typically attracts players from around the Section and sometimes other Sections. If Closed, then the tournament is only open to players from that Section. Players are grouped by NTRP rating.
- Level 5 - Section or District tournament that typically attracts players from around the Section or District and sometimes other Sections or Districts. If Closed, then the tournament is only open to players from that Section or District. Players are grouped by NTRP rating.
- Level 6 - Local tournament that typically attracts players from around the Section or local area. Players are grouped by NTRP rating.
- Level 7 - Local tournament that typically attracts players from a smaller geographic area and is typically no more than one day long. Players are grouped by NTRP rating.
