About Team Tournaments
Team tournaments are fun, competitive experiences for players to get the chance to compete as a team! Most team events are run in formats like round robin with playoffs or compass draws that guarantee players the same amount of matches whether they win or lose.
As a tournament director, please see the guide on: Creating a Team Tournament to get started. See below for a further explanation for team tournaments. If you have any further questions about running your team tournament, please reach out to your USTA Section Staff.

Team Distribution:
- How and When To Waterfall
When players enter team tournaments as individuals, the tournament director will waterfall players into teams. The purpose of waterfalling players is to have teams composed of evenly distributed levels. Tournament directors should wait until the evening before the tournament begins to create teams to avoid issues with withdrawals.
What is a Scorecard?
A scorecard is a compilation of the matches to be played in each team match.
Withdrawal & Alternate Procedures for Waterfalled Tournaments
Replacement of Withdrawing Players After the Draw is Done
The waterfall shall not be re-done if a player withdraws. The tournament shall replace a player who withdraws, is defaulted, or is otherwise removed from the draw after the waterfall is done, but before the player’s first match with next highest remaining alternate for the division.
If the withdrawal is by the player waterfalled into the #1 position on a team, the lower-waterfalled player on the team shall be moved into the #1 position and the alternate shall take the #2 position.
During-Tournament Alternate Procedure if Team Unable to Field Full Roster
If at any time a player at the tournament is unable to compete in one or more matches, the Coach shall notify the Tournament Director. The Tournament Director shall work with the Coach to find an alternate to substitute in for the player.
If an alternate substitutes in for one or more matches, the alternate shall play in the singles and/or doubles lineups in the last position and all other players or teams shall move up a position. The matches played will count toward the team score and will count for junior national ranking.
In singles, if an alternate is not found and a default occurs in the #1 position, the default shall occur in the #2 singles position and the #2 players shall move up a position. In doubles, if an alternate is not found and a default occurs in, the default shall occur in the last doubles position and all other teams shall move up a position.
A player, for reasons of illness, injury or personal circumstances, or default due to lateness, who does not play a match, is eligible to play another match on the same day and on a subsequent day. A player who is defaulted for reasons other than lateness is not permitted to play in a subsequent match.
How Are Points Calculated?
Players earn points based on individual wins in accordance with their position. Even if a team does not advance in the draw, players receive points for any singles and doubles matches won.
